Nagambie Endurance Ride

RIDES: Sunday 20km social, 40km training, 60km training & 80km endurance ride ENTRIES: from 11am Saturday 20km - $15, 40km - $30, 60km - $40 (Plus $5 day membership for non members) 80km - $80
Pre nomination by phone for all rides by 13th February please.
PRE RIDE VETTING: Saturday 2pm to 5pm
START TIMES: Sunday 20km – 8am, 40&60km – 6am, 80km – TBA (Nb. These may change due to weather conditions)
COURSE: tree lined sandy lanes, gravel roads and through farmland. Flat to undulating terrain. A good easy start to the year, very achievable
PRIZES: completion prizes for all completions in all rides. Trophies to third in all divisions in the 80km ride

For the big kids, all weekend we will be matching our Cellar Door aged and current wines to gourmet chocolates. Then on Sunday at 11am, for the little kids, there will be an Easter egg treasure hunt in the beautiful winery gardens - a post Easter treat not to be missed!

At its heart, the township of Nagambie offers a huge range of outdoor activities (both on and off the lake!) and is host to regular rowing regattas including the prestigious "Head of the River". If you're looking for a day trip, weekend escape, event location or tree change: here it is!
There's just so much to do in the region. Hire a canoe or tinnie and travel along the majestic Goulburn River, with its abundant bird life, native plants & animals.
Take a trip in the river boat between Mitchelton and the historic Tahbilk wineries.
Stay at one of the many accommodation houses, motels, resorts, B&Bs and leisure parks or find a peaceful camping spot. Not to mention all the fishing, skiing, rowing, sailing, boating and splashing?!
If you'd rather stay dry, there's a huge range of cellar doors and fabulous gourmet cafes and restaurants to visit. Or perhaps a drive or bike ride through neighbouring Longwood and Avenel and up into the Strathbogie Ranges, fossicking around the antique & produce stores, gem stone & art galleries, museums and markets. Maybe a picnic at the old Whroo gold fields and a tour of the local historic bridges and Goulburn Weir.
For those seeking a bit more action there's skydiving, four wheel driving, dirt bike riding and 'crash and bash' nights at the Nagambie Speedway and don't forget the golf courses, tennis courts, bowls and croquet clubs. And if you just want to unwind well it doesn't get much better than a massage or spa treatment followed by a glass of delicious local wine while watching the sunset over the lake.

A Brief History of Nagambie
Nagambie is a small, growing town of around 1900 people, situated at the southern end of the Goulburn Valley, 123 km north of Melbourne on the Goulburn Valley Highway, between Seymour and Shepparton, and 130 metres above sea-level.
The townscape is dominated by picturesque Lake Nagambie which lies beside the main street. The area is given over to vineyards, cereal, sheep, cattle, horse studs and tourism.
It has been claimed that one of the Natrakboolok, Ngooraialum or Thagungwurung Aboriginal tribes occupied the land around what became Nagambie. The first white men in the district belonged to the party of explorer Thomas Mitchell which crossed the Goulburn River just to the south-west at what became Mitchellstown.
Overlanders followed in his footsteps and therefore used the same river crossing, as did the postman on the mail route from Melbourne to Sydney, established in 1838. It was at this crossing that John Clark built the first licensed inn outside of Melbourne in the territory that would later become Victoria. That same year Mitchellstown became the first inland town site in Victoria to be surveyed (though it never developed) and it was here that the survivors of the massacre at Benalla arrived, also in 1838.
An Aboriginal Protectorate was briefly established at Mitchellstown in 1839 but was moved the following year to what is now Murchison. The land on which the town would develop was taken up as a squatting run in 1845 by Hugh Glass and John Purcell. Chateau Tahbilk was established in 1860 on a part of this run with the help of French vigneron Ludovic Marie who was also instrumental to the genesis of Murchison. A hotel, church and blacksmith were set up to cater for the through-traffic of teamsters journeying along the river system to Adelaide.
Hugh Glass had the township surveyed in 1868 by Marie. Land sales proceeded in 1870 and it was proclaimed as the private town of 'Nagambie' in 1872, said to be derived from a local Aboriginal word meaning 'lagoon'.
When floods killed off the mine at Graytown in 1870 many businesses relocated to Nagambie. However, the arrival of the railway in 1880 had a detrimental effect when Nagambie lost the coach and teamster.

Mud ramp facilities
Suitable for small hand launched boats/punts are located beside the McNamara's Point Public Boat Ramp as well as at Turner's Island and Major's Creek. Ask at the Visitor Information Centre.
Camping
Majors Creek Reserve, off Wattlevale Rd, Nagambie. This site has no formal amenities. The Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park & Nagambie Caravan Park provide camping facilities with full amenities.
